Aikijutsu – The Martial Art of the Samurai

aikijutsu

Aikijutsu is a martial art with roots in the combat techniques used by Samurais, called Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu. The Daitō-ryū has a rich history, dating back to more than 900 years, developed by Yoshimitsu, a samurai in the Minamoto Clan. There is a legend created around Yoshimitsu, which states he used to dissect the bodies or the enemies he killed in battle, in order to understand better the human body and develop more efficient combat techniques. These methods included joint-locks and hits to the vital points. Yoshimitsu’s grandson, Takeda, continues teaching these techniques and his students followed the traditions of samurai martial arts. One of Takeda’s trainees is Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido.

Then we can say about Aikijutsu that it has origins in both Aikido and Japanese Jujitsu. It is the middle grown, being a style not too hard and not too soft, but very efficient. The entire martial art is focused in neutralizing the opponent’s attack in an early stage. It mainly uses the force of the opponents and turns it against it, blocking and immobilizing him with minimum effort. One aspect that Takeda developed in this martial art is blocking the joints of the opponent with the knees, leaving thus the hands free, for weapon handling or dealing with other adversaries at the same time.aikijutsu2
